Researchers study yoga and stress relief among veterans

Up to 8 percent of Americans will experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at some point in their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Among those who are at a high risk for PTSD are members of the military. However, a team of scientists is studying the relationship between yoga and stress relief as a natural treatment for these individuals.

People who have PTSD may experience emotional numbness and intrusive thoughts related to their trauma. Standard treatment includes antidepressants and exposure therapy, in which a patient has to remember their trauma persistently in order to decrease its emotional impact.

These therapies work only 50 percent of the time according to researchers from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, who are evaluating yoga as a potential regimen.

As part of their study, they taught veterans week-long yoga courses.

"I did the course and things starting opening up. I started to feel happiness, sadness, emotions I couldn't even explain because I wasn't familiar with them," said study participant Rich Low, as quoted by Channel 3000. "It was a little jarring at first; I didn't know how to handle them, but overall it's been a great experience."

The Lineage Project takes a holistic approach to improving the lives of incarcerated individuals who are between the ages of 10 and 21. The nonprofit organization believes that yoga and meditation can help alleviate anxiety while supporting self-esteem and improving impulse control, according to the Huffington Post.

This can be valuable for the nearly 4,900 adolescents in New York's detention centers. Many of these individuals are racial minorities who come from places that are impoverished, driving them to gang culture and substance abuse.

Melik recalled one particular girl who benefited from his instruction.

She told him, "Bart, I did what you taught me, I breathed and watched my fear. I was able to focus and I heard what the judge said, what I needed to do to change. Previous times, I did not know what he said. But this time, the judge said he saw someone very different standing before him," Melik recounted to the news source.

Miranda Kerr’s environmental venture takes enthusiasts beyond New York yoga classes

Fans of New York's fashion models probably wonder, How do these women maintain such fine, toned physiques? With the help of New York yoga classes, of course! Among the fans of the mind-body regimen is Australian beauty Miranda Kerr, star of last year's Victoria's Secret Fantasy Bra unveiling.

But Kerr doesn't just use yoga exercises for stress relief. Recently, she announced that she will be teaching a free yoga class. In exchange, she's asking all interested people to participate in the international Earth Hour event, which takes place on March 31.

Specifically, Kerr wants fans to film and upload videos stating their commitment to the event, during which people turn off their lights for one hour as a sign of commitment to the environment.

The World Wildlife Fund first organized Earth Hour in 2007.

"I will conduct a free yoga class if 500 people upload their own 'I will if you will' challenge to youtube.com/earthhour," Kerr said, as reported by the New York Daily News.

Her class will likely be broadcast via YouTube, according to the news source.

Yoga provides natural stress relief for pediatric cancer patients, families

Thanks to modern medicine, children who have cancer are able to stand a fighting chance against their disease. However, these treatments can also come with a lot of pain and stress. One student athletic group from Fordham University decided to collect money for the Integrative Medicine and Palliative Care Team (IMPACT) at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore, which provides such complementary medicine to pediatric cancer patients and their families for free.

"I think it helps," Karen Moody, director of IMPACT, told the New York Daily News. "These families go through a lot, and, quite frankly, there's not enough drugs to make them feel better."

Moody herself is studying the positive health effects of yoga and is currently conducting a study on 30 patients.

The latest donation of $20,000 will help cover yoga and massage therapy.
