Yoga for stress relief may boost fathers’ heart health

Father's Day is this Sunday. Do you know what you're getting The Old Man? If he has a closet full of ties he never wears, or a medicine cabinet full of cologne he never uses, it may be a sign that you need to think outside the gift box. Have you considered signing him up for Dahn Yoga classes?

Maybe you should! Doctors at New York University's Langone Medical Center are using the upcoming holiday to remind the general public about measures of cardiac health that fathers, and males in general, should look out for.

Specifically, men need to be vigilant about:

- Blood pressure. Measurements should not exceed 120/80 mm Hg for adults aged 20 and older.

- Cholesterol. Doctors screen for good, bad and total cholesterol. Abnormally high cholesterol may increase the risk for heart disease.

- Body mass index. A BMI score of 25 or greater may lead to type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular problems.

Exercise, as well as a balanced diet, may help improve all these risk factors. What's the best form of physical activity? Yoga, of course!

One expert told the American Heart Association that this regimen may potentially lower blood pressure and improve both circulation and muscle tone. Furthermore, yoga for stress relief can help people who already dealt with acute heart problems, such as bypass surgery.

So if you truly "heart" your dad, nudge him into a yoga class.

Catcher Mike Nickeas doesn’t merely use yoga for stress relief

With spring training underway, New York Mets back-up catcher Mike Nickeas is working hard to secure a spot on the big-league roster. Although he has a mutually comfortable relationship with the pitching staff, the team was somewhat disappointed with what he did (or did not do) with the bat during 2011. In the offseason, Nickeas has been working hard with a mind-body regimen. However, he doesn't just use yoga for stress relief. The exercise is also meant to improve his performance in front of home plate as well as behind it.

"I'm removing all the inefficiencies from my swing, so I have more time to recognize pitches and see the ball," Nickeas told the New York Times. "My goal is to be an extremely tough out. I don't want to be the guy they get to, put a couple of pitches in and be done."

To that end, he practices yoga three times a week for flexibility and agility. He's also been videotaping his swing to send to hitting coach Dave Hudgens via email.

According to Hudgens, Nickeas is showing some early promise. However, only time will tell if the spring training hopeful can keep it up.

For all athletes who are interested in what yoga can do for their game, Dahn yoga classes are worth checking out. These exercises can help improve physical fitness, strength, flexibility and muscle relaxation, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Miranda Kerr uses yoga as more than exercises for stress relief

Models for Victoria's secret are often admired for their exceptional physiques, but it's important to remember that such appearances rarely come about on their own. Model Miranda Kerr practices yoga, and these are more than just exercises for stress relief for the model and new mom.

Kerr, 28, gave birth to a son last January and uses yoga, pilates and resistance bags to keep her body in shape.

"I do have less time, but I do try to exercise every day. I exercise at home with my son playing around with his toys on the floor," said Kerr, as quoted by The Associated Press, adding that she hopes her son will follow her healthy example.

Kerr was recently given the honor of being a Victoria's Secret Angel, a role that will have her featured prominently on this year's lingerie show to be televised on CBS, according to the News Source.

Ed Razek, chief marketing officer for Victoria’s Secret parent Limited Brands, told the AP that new mothers often use a show date as motivation to get back into shape – and the industry is quite happy with the results.

People who participate in New York yoga classes and similar courses may reap several health benefits, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, including improvements in body composition and stress management.

Yoga is a powerful method of stress relief that can alleviate the pain of many conditions

People who struggle with chronic foot pain are often in need of an efficient method of stress relief. The symptoms of their condition can be highly uncomfortable and distressing, which may increase tension and anxiety. Fortunately, there is a type of physical activity that can help them feel better inside and out – the holistic mind-body regimen called yoga.

This Eastern art promotes deep breathing, meditating, stretching and posing in order to heighten one's awareness of one's body. These techniques are meant to strengthen the connection between the physical and mental aspects of well-being, thereby allowing individuals to feel better about themselves, look within and find inner peace.

Since appearing in the Western world many years ago, the relaxing regimen has been adopted by people of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels. According to instructor Christopher Rivera, who spoke to the Sunday Times about the mindfulness system, individuals who pursue this physical activity are generally seeking to enhance peace, strength and commitment in their own lives.

"What it means to me is more than the way I define it," Rivera told the news source. "It has changed my life and thus I think more of it as the positive effects it has had on my existence."

He added that there are many variations of the practice, such as a particular form in which enthusiasts engage in the exercises in a very hot room.

"The reality is that as the pressures and stresses of the world have changed, people have responded by creating variations of yoga to meet the needs of the people," he said.

Those who engage in the holistic system will find a wealth of different styles of yoga at gyms and fitness studios near them. No matter what type they prefer or what conditions they may suffer from, engaging in this type of exercise may help them achieve optimal health and strive for their full potential.

Focusing on Bladder Meridian helps improve well-being, from detoxification to healthy eyesight

Balancing the mind and body is a delicate process that helps facilitate the flow of the vital life energy Ki through the meridian channels of the body. Improving this flux can help individuals optimize their well-being and achieve healthy eyesight in addition to a host of other benefits. By reforging the mind-body relationship through the practice of Dahn Yoga, those who have debilitating conditions such as chronic foot pain can alleviate their symptoms and experience better quality of life.

This month, Dahn Yoga and Health Centers is encouraging enthusiasts to focus on the Bladder Meridian. Concentrating on this particular energy channel can help individuals who are struggling from numerous ailments, such as pain or discomfort in the eyes, neck and lower back. Additionally, engaging in a number of specific exercises to strengthen this meridian can help people achieve better bladder control.

The Bladder Meridian is the longest in the body and extends from the corners of the eyes to the toes. The organ plays a significant role in helping the body get rid of toxins. Because it is so important, any injury or damage to the bladder can cause incontinence, reproductive difficulties, tension and anxiety.

Yoga practitioners are encouraged to pay attention to this particular meridian in July. They can improve their bladder health by performing a number of gentle exercises. One pose calls for stretching the legs forward and shaking each limb alternately, while others involve lying down on the stomach and lifting the torso by anchoring the arms to the floor. Such exercises can strengthen and stimulate the circulation of Ki along the Bladder Meridian.

Facilitating the flow of this crucial energy throughout the body can help individuals ensure its even distribution and their good health.

Yoga is one of the most popular stress relief activities chosen by celebrities

People all over the world have found that yoga is one of the better stress relief activities in which to engage, particularly if they suffer from conditions such as migraine headaches or chronic ankle and foot pain. According to many enthusiasts, the holistic mind-body system is infinitely beneficial for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. The breathing exercises help calm the self, while the stretches and poses enhance flexibility, stamina and endurance.

This may be why so many individuals have incorporated the gentle Eastern art into their daily lives. This type of workout has taken Hollywood by storm, with countless celebrities engaging in it on a daily basis.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart was recently photographed leaving a yoga studio with a particularly toned, slender figure, according to the Daily Mail. The actress wore dark skinny jeans and a black t-shirt that revealed her trim stomach, which some attribute to her rigorous workout regimen.

Another famous yoga fan is none other than the wife of millionaire rock star Sting. Trudie Styler has a slim, athletic build that many women would love to have, and she credits the holistic Eastern practice for her physique.

"Yoga is for everyone. I do an hour and a half each day. It restores you," she told the news source. "People say, 'Oh no, it's all right for you, but I haven't got time.' It's a false notion. We can all make time. There's only one you – you're only given one body, not a load of bodies."

The 57-year-old is also a staunch supporter of good nutrition, adding that she avoids sugar because it is a "poison" and a "major culprit for weight gain," quoted by the Daily Mail.

Yoga is one of the most effective exercises for stress relief, even for Lady Gaga

Many people know the saying "If you don't have your health, you don't have anything." Feeling energetic is an important step to achieving one's full potential, but it is something that may elude patients who suffer from chronic foot pain. While medication can help, it may only provide temporary relief. Individuals who truly want to address their condition and strengthen their mind-body connection can turn to Dahn Yoga. Many people have found the holistic Eastern art to be one of the more powerful exercises for stress relief, which, in turn, can relieve pain.

Yoga and meditation focus on enhancing all aspects of an individual's well-being, including the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Optimizing health can help people achieve their dreams and better appreciate the infinite beauty of nature.

This may be why the soothing system – which promotes breathing exercises, stretches and poses – has taken the Western world by storm. Many celebrities in Hollywood are no strangers to yoga, and pop superstar Lady Gaga is no exception.

Although most enthusiasts choose loose-fitting, comfortable clothing in which to meditate, the blond singing sensation sets her own trend when it comes to workout attire. Famous for avant-garde fashion choices such as a dress composed of raw meat, Lady Gaga apparently also picks interesting gear in which to do yoga.

The Gather Celeb News Channel reports that during her trip to Taiwan, the performer entered a yoga studio wearing a black lace catsuit and sky-high platform shoes. She accentuated her look with bright red lips, hip-length hair and a black yoga mat embellished with gold chains.

Nearly 500 of her fans – or "Little Monsters," as Gaga is wont to call her supporters – turned out to see her leave the class, according to PopEater.

Such exercises have helped countless individuals all over the world strengthen their physical, mental and emotional well-being.

In fact, the holistic mind-body regimen has won some people over to the extent that they feel the urge to share the techniques with others. Many yoga instructors have experienced this determination.

"Becoming a yoga instructor is an act of service as we deliver something from a vulnerable place. We are the guides, and you are your own teacher with the practice of yoga," teacher Lorraine Ortiz told the North Coast Citizen.
