John Jay Park seniors prefer New York yoga classes over exercise equipment.

An anonymous donor has agreed to give senior visitors to John Jay Park four pieces of exercise equipment, according to DNAinfo. However, many of the potential beneficiaries declined the offer in favor of New York yoga classes.

"I have been a member of the exercise program that started last fall, and it's wonderful," Marcia Reese, 82, told board members at a meeting, quoted by the news source. "We exercise for an hour with a trainer. Seniors, I believe, need supervision…What we don't need is equipment."

Enthusiasts who prefer yoga for stress relief and fitness agree that having a supervisor to help guide classes, as well as help anyone who needs physical assistance, would be more useful to older visitors of the park, as reported in DNAinfo. Instead of equipment, they would prefer the exercise area had soft ground material on which they could work out.

Since 2009, the senior area of John Jay Park had secured money for renovations, including new benches and a soft ground. However, none of that money has been spent yet. When the equipment donation was an option, some park patrons expressed concerns over maintenance.

The Parks Department has yet to vet or accept the donation, according to the news source.

As of 2006, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine estimated that more than 13 million American adults practiced yoga.
