Pregnant women discover the link between yoga and stress relief

Yoga and stress relief have been inextricably linked for many centuries. The holistic program first originated in Asia, but has since taken the Western world by storm with its relaxing exercises and self healing benefits. Millions of Americans report that, aside from foot massage and reflexology or other tranquil techniques, yoga is one of the best ways to feel calmer and more centered after a long, stressful day.

The regimen is particularly popular among expectant mothers. During pregnancy, some of the more rigorous activities – such as jogging and biking – may be no longer appropriate. As a result, women who are looking to stay physically fit often turn to the gentle art of yoga, which can help them enhance their flexibility, stamina and endurance without putting undue strain on the body or posing a risk to the fetus.

Yoga is also a great way to stay calm and prepared for the process of childbirth, since it teaches deep breathing techniques that improve one's awareness of one's body.

"Prenatal yoga changed my life. It made me want to be a yoga teacher, and it made me believe I could [be]," wrote enthusiast Erin Wheeler in an article for the New Tampa Patch. "As with any other physical activity, you must be cleared by your doctor to practice prenatal yoga. The ancient art is modified and designed for the health of the expectant mother and her baby."

She added that in a prenatal yoga class, the objective is to feel the love and comfort that surrounds a pregnant woman on every level. These gatherings may also be a good way to form a supportive network that consists of ladies in the same situation, preventing mothers-to-be from feeling frightened or alone.
