When one thinks of ways in which to relax during one's free time, leisurely activities such as reading, watching TV or even sleeping generally come to mind. But what if there was a way to wind down and improve one's physical health simultaneously?

This is where the holistic mind-body regimen of yoga may come in. Countless individuals have reported that the technique is one of the most effective exercises for stress relief, particularly if one resides in a busy city. Residents of a hectic metropolis – like overworked Manhattanites looking for a little peace and quiet at a New York yoga studio – may find solace in a fitness routine that allows them to stretch, become more flexible and enhance their mental well-being.

Although city-dwellers know much about tension and anxiety, professional athletes do, too. NBC Sports reports that top goalie Tim Thomas, who helped catapault the Bruins to Stanley Cup fame this year, is a major supporter of yoga. The hockey pro confessed that he was skeptical about adopting the gentle, soothing exercises at first, but the health benefits that he achieved convinced him.

"I did some yoga, which sounds kind of funny," he told the news source. "I actually didn't know how much it was going to help, but it helps balance out your body. They try to find weaknesses in your body and work on them so that they catch up with the rest of your body."

He added that the regimen helped him feel more balanced in terms of strength, stamina and flexibility.

Regardless of how one experiences and deals with tension and anxiety, yoga can be an effective method of relaxation that helps enhance multiple aspects of one's well-being.
