More men engage in yoga
Yoga is a holistic mind-body regimen that is known for welcoming enthusiasts of all ages, shapes, sizes and levels of experience. The Eastern art is flexible when it comes to the right place or time to perform it, and appropriately enough, it also helps its practitioners become more limber. Much like the stretching of a wire, which can enable it to become more functional and strong, yoga helps elongate and tone the muscles of the body.
The breathing exercises, stretches and poses of the regimen are popular with both men and women. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the lingering stereotype that yoga is a feminine activity has been eradicated due to the great number of confident males who have incorporated the routine into their daily lives.
“Most men feel like they need a tough, hard workout,” said enthusiast Duane Welte, quoted by the news source. “But they can go to yoga and they can be challenged. It's not just a women's thing.”
Instructor Claudine Beeson said that the majority of her yoga class tends to be female, but that this trend is changing rapidly in many areas of the country. Urban regions in particular tend to have a greater percentage of male yoga students.
