Count your breath
By rigby | September 27, 2007
When starting relazation or meditation, it can feel so hard to quiet your mind. We have such a strong habit of thinking all the time that to stop thinking seems impossible. I would like to suggest counting your breath when you start to relax. Counting allows you mind to think, but of something nuetral, 1,2,3,4,… numbers don’t have stress and anxiety attached to them as do your laundry lists of things to do, lists of who bothered you that day or lists of things your kids might forget to do. So counting occupies your mind, but doesn’t evoke negative emotions and brings your focus to your breathing, which will allow you to relax and meditate!

most masters i’ve met in many differant walks will always agree that essentially its impossible to stop thinking. So like your saying i tell members the object is to focus thought. i’ve heard some masters say that we can only think of one thing at a time but i beg to differ — in a world where multi tasking is common place and is nurtured from the get go — we always have at least a “front burner” and “back burner” going. so i lead members into using the front focus on the breath; where is it? where does it go? how does it feel? reminding them not to judge but to just feel. and use the back burner to feel the dahnjon. occupy the whole mind with the body and the condition now. i also remind them the average human has a new thought every six seconds and that new thought is the gateway to a new moment, every moment is the oppertunity to choice NOW as the expierience. and to stay in the now, one can focus on the current FEELING in the body. and by creating this habit of staying in the now you become meditative and enlightened.

When counting disappears automatically, your body and mind will be one with your breath.
